Porcelain Crowns

There are two main types of porcelain crowns, either all ceramic or ceramic fused to metal. Generally we use porcelain fused to metal on back teeth, especially molars, and all ceramic on front teeth. The metal adds a lot of strength to the restoration and is more fracture resistant than all ceramic. The disadvantage of the metal backing is it can sometimes make the tooth appear opaque and not reflect light as a natural tooth would. This is not so critical on back teeth. When the most undetectable crowns are the goal, all ceramic is the most esthetic, and that is what we would recommend.
